New Year, New Server [02 Jan 2010|03:47pm]
So, my home server/router (Gateway, 800mhz Pentium 3 with 512mb RAM)'s Gentoo installation finally decided either it didn't like the DHCP server it had installed, or the two network cards, and stopped associating itself with an IP. I've been meaning for a while to replace the machine, since it was rather often running out of memory, but I was hoping to have a little more time!

Now, I have this problem (it must be with my DSL modem) that after anywhere from 30-60 minutes, idle connections will drop, but a disconnect notice won't be sent. This means I get kicked right off MUCKs, with no notification, which is bad. However, my home router, running x86 Linux never had this happen, it only does with off-the-shelf routers and dd-wrt, like my WRT54GL or my Netgear WNR3500.

One of the reasons I wanted to replace the home server was because one Gentoo installation was doing BOTH routing and server functions. Because upgrading the kernel to work with iptables is difficult, my kernel version was probably from two years ago. I've been wanting to separate it, and get a quad-core machine that would run several VMs, including a proper router distro, as well as another few installations of Linux for a file server, personal shell access, etc.

However, doing that would be a little more expensive, probably around ~$400-500 to build the machine. Now, I've been playing around a bit and figured out that if I moved some stuff offsite, I can do MUCK and IRC stuff on a Linode where I won't get disconnected, and have a smaller, less powerful home server that will do fileserver and other functions. I'm currently looking at the Eee box, which has a gigabit connection and runs linux for $230.

So far, the Linode works, and running straight off my WNR3500 router at home works like any normal person would have it. It seems to handle BitTorrent, uPnP, and stuff just fine. I'm still trying to debate if I should build a more powerful machine and spend more money, or pay a monthly fee for a Linode that I'm sure I'll have a use for anyway (static IPs are nice) and have a cheaper home server.

Eee with XP or 7 for sale [29 Dec 2009|08:21pm]
Now that I got my HP laptop, I need to sell my Eee! It's an Eee 1000HA, running XP with a 1.6ghz Atom, only about 9 months old and in great condition. (product page, black)

I'm looking for $300, but for $350 I'll throw in my copy of Windows 7 Home Premium. Either way I'll also throw in the slipcase, since it goes with the Eee. Not including shipping.

FC 2010! [10 Dec 2009|08:38pm]
[ mood | happy ]

So, instead of taking two full weeks off unpaid over Christmas shutdown, I ker-wrangled working six of the ten days, and two of them are paid holidays anyway. So what does this mean? I'm going to be able to take the time off to go to FC again this year.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to go for a week and a half like last time, just Thu (or Wed., am debating) till Mon., but I'm going!
Still need to find a room (several prospects, so I'm not too worried) but I do need to figure out how to get from the airport to the hotel, and such, since it's not 'attached' anymore.

So! Who's going? Who can get me to and from the airport? :3

Youmacon [31 Oct 2009|01:04am]
So tomorrow I'm going to my first non-furry con, which is going to be weird. Fortunately I know some people that will be there (mostly furries :P) as well as a few RL friends going with me. Hopefully it will be fun!

Netflix [13 Apr 2009|09:16pm]
I subscribed to Netflix a little while ago, and am rather enjoying the abilility to rent Blu-Ray movies from them. It's funny, because at first I thought I'd get it and just watch Instant movies, but it turns out there's only a few on there I want to see, whereas most of my queue is avaliable on BD and not for Instant Viewing. But all the better for me, as video stores want $4/5 for a two night rental, and if I watch a movie on Netflix and send it right back, I'm playing ~$11/mo. for 6-8 movie rentals a month, and whatever I want to watch Instant on top of that. Sounds like a good deal to me!

Anyway. Anyone watching me on here on Netflix? I'd like to add some more people to my Friends so I can find other movies, and stuff.
Add me! (and give me your link so I can add you back!)

Philadelphia: In and out [12 Apr 2009|11:07pm]
So, since I was laid off for the past week, I decided to take a trip to Philadelphia, to visit [info]jouva since he just moved back from Wisconsin. Had a rather nice drive, actually, despite it being about 12 hours each way, putting a total of like 1.6k miles on my car. Had a good week, saw [info]giza and [info]omnibahumut on Wednesday, and went down to Maryland Thursday to see [info]ferian. Now I'm trying to put all my tweets on a Google Map to see how I did timewise.. but I can't find a location of all the tunnels on I-76 in PA :(

Year in Review (er, 2009, so far) [16 Mar 2009|08:00pm]
So quite a bit has happened so far, I guess. I got a new laptop (Eee PC 1000H), a new phone and my own phone service (HTC Fuze on AT&T), and started my co-op job full time. Everything is working well so far.
I'm most likely going to Wisconsin over a week layoff period in April, I'm going to FCN a couple weeks after, and since we already have work off due to plant shutdown, I want to go to AC if I can find someone to stay with. MFF is also likely, as is FC next year.
Not too bad, so far.

Looking for a room at AC! [27 Jan 2009|09:11pm]
I know either nobody who can help read these, or nobody reads my journals, but I figure I might as well ask anyway :P
I'm headed to AC this year, and for once I think I'm actually going to end up going by myself. So! I need a place to stay :3 I'm good, I swear!

Off to California & FC [14 Jan 2009|11:35pm]
So I'm headed off to California! Yay. Where the weather isn't 4F. Out there for about a week and a half, including FC, then back to start my new job. Going to see a bunch of fuzzies while I'm out there, hope to have a good time and stuff. I think I have everything packed >.>
Flight leaves at 3pm, but the airport's two hours away, so I have quite a bit of traveling ahead of me.

Looking for a phone [08 Jan 2009|07:06pm]
So here I am, finishing my co-op position. Two weeks off (mostly going to be spent in California as vacation) then back to work in the same position, as a contractor. It's likely that I'm going to move out, and since I'm going to be able to afford it I'm going to get my own phone service.
I have a Motorola RAZR2 on Verizon right now, and it's not too bad (far better when flashed with alternate firmware rather than Verizon's own crap) but I want to consolidate some of my electronics, so I'm selling my iPAQ 111 (and probably my current phone, too) to get a proper smartphone.
Now, I've been wanting a smartphone for a long time, but now that I'm serious about it, I've been looking directly at plans. Finding a model isn't too big an issue, but the plans are. This is what I have so far:

ServiceHome coverageUpstate coverageMonthly costsPhoneWANT ratingPhone cost
Verizon Great EVDO Decent 1x (good data roaming)   $30 for data
+ $10 for 500 texts
= $40/mo (Family plan)
HTC Touch Pro 2/5 (VZW suckage as usual) $250 [Amazon]
Alltel EVDO Unknown, possibly all EVDO? (At least 1x)   $70/mo for 500 minutes + my circle, and unlimited data
 + $8 for 400 texts
= $78/mo
HTC Touch Pro 2/5 (Too expensive) $280 [Direct]
AT&T Good EDGE Probably GPRS   $40 for 450 minutes
+  $5 for 200 texts
+ $30 for data
= $75/mo
HTC FUZE 5/5 (The phooone) $99 [Amazon]
$200 [Work/AT&T]
AT&T Tilt 3/5 (not as nice as the FUZE) $-50 (you read that right) [Amazon]
Developer G1 3/5 (Phone, but no 3G anywhere) $425
Sprint EVDO No data coverage :( $70/mo for 450 minutes and unlimited data, txt, everything HTC Touch Pro 4/5 (Plan and 3G is a plus) $250 [Amazon]
Palm Pre 4/5 (New and shiny) $?
T-mobile Spotty EDGE vs GPRS Probably none   $40 for 300 minutes + myFaves
+ $25 for data and 400 texts
= $65/mo
G1 4/5 (Phone, but not service) $180 [Amazon]

I'm tempted to go with Sprint due to them being all-inclusive at $70, which is just about the going rate for only voice and data on other carriers. I don't like that there isn't much data coverage higher north, but I doubt I'll be traveling that way much anymore anyway. I'd like to get a G1 but T-mobile sucks around here.. so I'm kind of tossed up between a HTC Fuze on AT&T or (basically the same model) HTC Touch Pro on Sprint.

California bound (Read: FC) [15 Dec 2008|05:46pm]
So, I just booked my tickets to go to Cali, from Jan 15 to the 26th. Visiting some friends just in time to end the trip with FC! And as soon as I get home, I'll be starting my job as a full time employee instead of just a co-op student. Yay!

I do kinda need a room, though! Help would be appreciated.
